What is Journal Stitching?

Journal Stitching is a daily (or almost daily - no pressure!) practice of marking the days, seasons, nature and anything else you're thinking about or noticing.

You can stitch words or numbers to record a thought, a birthday or event.

You can use coloured floss to mark the temperature in stitch or even use select coloured fabric patches or snippets to record the weather.

Templates can be used to add all kinds of images from animals to flowers and mushrooms as well as to mark the Seasons.

I've created a special Template Set that includes the sun, a cloud, and snowflake to mark the weather.

There is a tree, leaves, a mushroom and a flower to mark the Seasons. There are also animals - a songbird, a goose, a bunny, a cat and a dog to track wildlife and furry friends.

There is even a cup and saucer, a star and a heart to record celebrations or emotions.

If birds are your thing, there is also a Mini Animal Template Set that would be ideal for Journal Stitching. I intend to use both sets.

This set has two repeats from the Nature and Season set - the Cat and Bunny.

Note: If you're buying both sets and don't want a repeat, type the word PENGUIN in the notes section during checkout and the repeat cat & bunny will be replaced with a mini penguin and hopping bunny.

If you already have the Mini Animal set and don't need the cat or bunny, do the same, type PENGUIN when ordering the Nature and Seasons Set and they will be swapped out for a penguin and hopping bunny.

What Supplies Do I Need?

There is a general list of supplies below to get you started. But also think about what you already have. This type of stitching is great for using up scraps of fabric and unused threads or embellishments.

Using fabrics, clothing or cloth that has meaning are an excellent choice for Journal Stitching.

For example, the goldfish fabric in the sample above is from curtains I made for my daughter's bedroom over 30 years ago, so it has a special meaning to me making it ideal for inclusion in my Journal Stitching.

Here's a general List of Supplies for the Stitch Along:

  1. Base for Stitching - Felt, Quilt Batting or Cotton/Linen Fabric

Note: I use wool blend felt, but acrylic felt is ok too, as long as it is easy to stitch through and thick enough to stand up to layers of stitching.

  2. Fabric Scraps, small pieces, buttons, cording or beads, anything goes.

  3. Thread - 6 Stranded Embroidery Floss, Pearl Cotton Size 8 or 12.

See My Favourite Threads video for recommendations.

  4. Needles - Embroidery, Milliners or Sashiko Needles.

See The Types of Needles I Use for Slow Stitching video for recommendations.

  1. Templates (Optional)

Make your own or Get some from my shop.

  2. Erasable Marking Pen or Light Coloured Pencil.

  3. Small Scissors for snipping threads.

  4. Fabric Scissors or Rotary Cutter and Mat.

  5. Sewing pins or appliqué pins and Pincushion.

  6. Regular sewing thread or waste thread for basting (optional).

  7. Needle Threader (optional).

  8. Thimbles or finger protectors (optional).

What Size and Shape is the Stitch Journal?

The short answer is it's up to you. This Stitch Along is meant to be no stress, flexible and unique to you.

One idea is to stitch a scroll, starting with a manageable sized strip, for example 10 inches (25 cm) long and then adding to it as needed. The width is up to you - it could be as small as 2 inches (5 cm) wide as tall as 4 inches (10 cm) wide.

Another idea is to a stitch page, adding a new page as one is complete. The pages could be small, for example 4 x 6 inches (10 x 15 cm) or larger, 6 or 8 inches (15 or 20 cm). Rectangle or Square shapes will work. The completed pages could be stitch bound and compiled into a book.

The key is to make it manageable and appealing to you. It's your Stitched Journal so you choose what works for you.
