How Words can Inspire Stitching

As part of the Journal Stitch Along (read more about it here) participants used a word list to inspire stitching.
So how do you use words to inspire a stitching practice? Read on.

The words BIRD and WING led to adding this heron.
To create the heron I traced the shape onto the fabric using a mini template and then added the stitching details.
The heron is part of the Mini Animal Template Set. Because I had these bird templates, I had my choice of response to the word prompts.
In this case I had already added the heron shape to my journal stitching but the words Bird and Wing pushed me to add more details: an eye, yellow to the beak and some pale blue stitching to the background.

The words FURRY and FRIEND contributed to the idea to add this cat silhouette.
Even though I currently have a lovable furry friend, a dog, the words made me think of my first cat from long ago so I added her to my journal stitching.
You never know what idea or memory a word list can bring to mind.
(The cat template is part of the Nature and Seasons set created for the Stitch Along)

The words OVAL and SPIRAL led to this freeform design. Oval shaped fabric was stitched in place, some French Knots were added and then the spiral was stitched.
The spiral was created with the Running Stitch, first in navy blue and then bright orange was stitched in between the navy stitches.
In this case the words didn't spark a memory, instead they gave me a direction to go with my stitching.
The word list was a big success. Participants came up with so many creative ways to use the words and no two creations were the same.
This is a peek at the collaborative Pinterest Board where Stitch Along progress can be shared.
Feel free to hop over and have a look! It's great to see what everyone is doing!
